SAN DIEGO PUNK CD INTERVIEW
SDP: Is Taps Taps Lights Out Japanese Sunday’s first official release?
ERIC: It’s our first official legit release of off a label… We’ve released a split CD called “Real Friends Have Three Ways” with Hialeah and the late great Resolver a year before, it was three tracks Japanese Sunday, three tracks Hialeah, three tracks Resolver… There’s a last track on it that was a collaborative track involving members
from all the bands involve on the CD… I t was recorded by Mario Quintero from Black Box Recording Studios.  Before all that we recorded a four song EP called “The Aeronautic” and sold it at our shows. Both of the previous recordings leading up to Taps Taps are pretty rare actually…I don’t even have a copy…but I’m pretty sure you might be able to find something at Off the Record or M-theory…

SDP: How do you feel about the final product? Are there any particular highlights or aspects you wish you could change?
ERIC: I can say that from the whole band and producer that we are all very happy with the end result of Taps Taps Lights Out…there is nothing we’d change about it…we are all very proud of our hard work.
SDP: How would you describe the album and what type of music fans do you think it appeals to?
ERIC: I personally think it would appeal to musicians more than your average listener, in that musicians would probably appreciate what we are doing more…It’s not as accessible to a person that would listen to the “norm”… It’s definitely got a post-hardcore edge about it…lately press has been calling it post-rock and shoegaze…But I hope that it would appeal to people who like bands like Sunny Day Real Estate, Three Mile Pilot or Explosions in the Sky…All of those bands including numerous others have come to mean a lot to all of the members of Japanese Sunday.
SDP: What was the recording process like?
ERIC: There was a sense of urgency on my part in recording this…I wanted to get it done…we sat on this material for a good while before it saw the light of day and I just wanted to get it out there…Although, the recording process was actually very relaxed…we recorded it with our close friends Mario Quintero and Mike Pereira at Black Box…At first I thought it would be nerve racking because it was the first time for most of us to record in a “real deal” studio…But they did a good job of keeping us relaxed through the whole experience.
SDP: How has the response been so far?
ERIC: The response has been great…far beyond what I thought would happen…we were nominated for a SDMA this year among some awesome bands…we’ve been getting a lot of great press behind it…we are very happy with it…our label is very happy with it…
SDP: What’s next for the band?
ERIC: We are taking a break from some shows for a little while and writing up some follow up material…I think the only show we have booked for the rest of the year is going to be at The Casbah, Saturday, December 2nd with Transfer and The Jade Shader.
SDP: Anything else you’d like to add?
ERIC: Thanks Joel…you’re fucking sexy! J  A  P  A  N  E  S  E  S  U  N  D  A  Y ::COPYRIGHT 2007::ALL RIGHTS RESERVED::JAPANESE SUNDAY:: press
